MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

A few years ago I took some time and created a bunch of Masters of the Universe art. It was something that I really just wanted to take up on my own for fun. It helped lead me to work on the actual production last year. Unfortunately, that show was put on hold for a bit. This is not that work, but my own fan art. But all of this was really really fun. I spent time thinking about the whole world of Eternia. It was alway an important IP for me as a kid. I wanted to capture some of that childhood imagination in these designs and keyframes.

The design work leans heavy into the Mechanical aspects of the word of MOTU. Mostly because my work leans that way. and I wanted to play to my strength. Doesn't mean I didn't have fun with the characters and keyframes of Eternia that I did do though. Strap in for a world of fantasy, monsters, magic and science!

I hope you guys enjoy. And now…the art!

I HAVE THE POWER - My take on the main guy He-Man was based on both the old show and the old toys. I just had to do my take of try that transformation sequence. I really wanted it to be about the power that Adam is absorbing.

CASTLE GRAYSKULL - Above is the one closest to the original toy/show. You can see a hesitant prince Adam and Cringer in the foreground walking towards the Jaw Bridge.

SKELETOR - The main man himself. I went pretty dark with him. I knew it could not just be a big skull headed dude that cackled and was silly. He is more magical undead in my take.

SKELETOR - I kept certain things pretty close. I also tried to keep him muscled out and yoked. I even tried to keep the same colors as the original toy. I know it’s not as grounded as I feel he would be in an actual movie. But I figured I could desaturate

ATTACK TRAK - the toy is just so bizarre. And me deciding to make it a vehicle and troop transport really took it over the edge. It still tried to keep scale in mind though as far as the actual design. This thing would absolutely destroy whatever is in f

ATTACK TRAK - This thing was designed to be a beast! Bus size tracks slamming down on is enemies!

ATTACK TRAK - I wanted it to have a lot of energy and destruction. Real sense of frenzy in this one. You can see some of the forces of evil and a Roton getting absolutely destroyed in this frame.

WIND RAIDER - I was tempted to go the whole Dutch clog rough of the toy but ended up making it an open cockpit fighter. Still has some of the telling of the wild raider but much more aerodynamic this time around.

WIND RAIDER - I wanted to do a few keyframes of this guy. I played up the open cockpit configuration of the fighter. To a key that was almost felt like a piece of WWI fighter art.

WIND RAIDER - Really wanted to see him taking the fight to the minions of evil. For this keyframe I imagined the fighters winding around the lower sections of Castle Grayskull with Rotons in pursuit.

BATTLE RAM - The Battle Ram is hands down my favorite toy as a kid. It was a simple toy with details made up of stickers you had to apply. But I remember having so much fun with this one. I made it two man ground vehicle. Armored attack vehicle.

BATTLE RAM - I didn’t change much overall. I basically just realized it and made it a bit more grounded. Still kept a lot of the toy in there.

BATTLE RAM - Another aspect of the Battle Ram I wanted to play up is that it would also be a mobile armory. So it can open up and store canons, swords and shields and whatnot. You can see the classic shield very prominently in this image.

SKY SLED - his one is very close to the toy for sure. Just added scale and details and resurfacing to make it more streamlined. I loved as a kid that the Battle Ram was not just a ground vehicle but also had the air vehicle built into it as well.

SKY SLED - The way I went about all this work was first designing everything before I worked on any keyframes. I loved taking all my designs at the end and working with them together in a keyframe.

BATTLE FOR GRAYSKULL - The calm before the storm! Always had this keyframe in my head. Way before I designed anything. Love seeing all the design work in an actual keyframe.

THE BATTLE FOR GREYSKULL - This one was so much fun! Just epic scale and still pretty grounded take on everything. The way the Stridors tower over the Battle Rams really played well.

ROTON - I really took the Rotons to a different place. I loved the idea of this toy as a kid. Really streamlined it and made these more organic.

ROTON - My generaly thinking with my take on these guys was that they are sentient to a certain degree. I always envision these as something that Skeletor magic unearthed in the lower bowels of Snake Mountain.

ROTON - I also wanted to take the Roton and make it an actual tank like hovering vehicle. As if at one point in the history of Eternia, these once littered the battle fields of old.

STRIDOR - These guys! I know the original toy was actually sentient. For my take I made them robotic mounts. I wanted them to have a bit of the feeling of the mythical Trojan horse.

STRIDOR - I love figuring out how things work with my mechanical designs. So early on I wanted to show how soldiers would actually get into one of these guys.

STRIDORS CHARGING! - This is one of those keyframes that was always in my head. Even before I had my design. You can get a good look at the lances in attack position. Loved trying to capture the frenetic energy of a battle scene.

THE BONE THRONE - Skeletor on his Bone throne had to be done. I made it super creepy, dark and evil. He isn’t the bafoon of the old filmation show.

SECRETS OF GRAYSKULL - So, this is a weird one for sure. First time I’ve based a scene off of a decal. For those who don’t know, the Castle Grayskull toy had a decal on the lower section of a dungeon and all the beast and creatures in it.

GRAYSKULL - One of my alternate takes onGrayskull. I envisioned that skull portion was actually a being thousands of years ago in Eternia. One of the giants of old who fell in battle . A giant fossil to the history of Eternia. And years ago an ancient cit

SNAKE MOUNTAIN - The idea for this one was to give a sense of the snake being alive and breaking from the fields of molten lava in the histories of old. the evil and dark magic was cast upon it frozen into this giant mountain of Snake and rock.

ORKO - Orko was not my most favorite character. For this one though I made him more gritty and also made him a little larger in scale and humanoid. He isn’t the silly pal in my take. This Trollan isn’t a goofball. He is a much more serious wizard.
